We are lucky to have
had so many great characters through the years at John Warner, and maybe one of the largest in any
shape or form is Paul Gulvin, also known as 'Gonk' or just 'Gulv'.During a fixture in the
1995/96 season he was sent from the field of play by the referee for a scuffle with a frustrated
opponent. This was very unlike the big fella, as he is very large but also very placid.
After
leaving the pitch he stood alongside the fans, management and subs. After 5-10 minutes the referee
spotted him on the sideline, and asked him to put on another shirt as it sometimes confuses those
who are playing.
As the referee turned his back 'Gulv' delved down the nearest bag and put on the
top that was in it. After another 10 minutes the ref looked over at the line and stopped the game.
As he run over he looked upset and in dismay, "That's my tracksuit top" said the ref, "You've
been down my bag!". Shrugging his shoulders and smirking 'Gulv' replied, "I thought it was one of
ours".
"Give it back" said the ref. After handing it back the ref noticed that the zip was broken,
probably due to the sheer bulk of the geezer who'd worn it!
"It's broken and it was a Christmas
present!" he said with his voice wavering under the strain, the crowd were giggling ( have some
compassion lads ), "I'll report you lot" he said, and he did!!! ( sad git ).
There is a happy
ending to this story, rumour has it that Santa Claus brought him a new one the following year ( ah,
nice ).
